Rotarians set up health camps and training facilities in undeveloped countries and in communities struggling with HIV\/AIDS and malaria. Yet 400 million people in the world cannot afford or do not have access to basic health care.&nbsp; Disease results in misery, pain, and poverty for millions of people worldwide. That\u2019s why treating and preventing disease is so important to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The core principle of DEI emphasizes that all individuals, regardless of their background, should have <strong>equal access<\/strong> to healthcare services. This includes not only treatment but also preventive measures, education, and resources that can help mitigate health disparities.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To effectively promote disease prevention, healthcare initiatives must be <strong>culturally sensitive <\/strong>and <strong>inclusive<\/strong>. This involves understanding the unique values and beliefs of diverse communities, employing culturally appropriate communication strategies, and building trust within these populations. By addressing these cultural differences, public health efforts can be more effective and equitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-base-color has-primary-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color has-large-font-size coblocks-animate wp-elements-39f7c20a4aa69a2a3dbcd2ae59ab37f1\" data-coblocks-animation=\"fadeIn\"><strong>WHY DEI MATTERS?\u201d SERIES<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-0e8e047add3eb7870ef0417e9aed786a\"><strong><strong>International Day of Persons with Disabilities (3 December)<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-center coblocks-animate\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 36%\" data-coblocks-animation=\"fadeIn\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dignity\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-color\">dignity<\/mark><\/a>, rights and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Well-being\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-color\">well-being<\/mark><\/a>&nbsp;of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Civil_and_political_rights\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-color\">political<\/mark><\/a><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-color\">,&nbsp;<\/mark><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Economic,_social_and_cultural_rights\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-color\">social<\/mark><\/a><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-color\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Economic,_social_and_cultural_rights\">, <\/a><\/mark><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Economic,_social_and_cultural_rights\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-color\">economic and cultural<\/mark><\/a>&nbsp;life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"356\" src=\"https:\/\/dg-newsletter2425.rid3450.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/03.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1067 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2024 Theme: Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the priorities of the global disability agenda is to advance the agency and leadership of persons with disabilities. Increasing the participation of persons with disabilities in decision-making processes and promoting their leadership in all areas of life will ensure their inclusion in all aspects of society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-border-color has-primary-border-color wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"border-width:4px;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">An estimated 1.3 billion people experience significant disability. This represents 16% of the world\u2019s population, or 1 in 6 of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-center coblocks-animate\" style=\"grid-template-columns:26% auto\" data-coblocks-animation=\"fadeIn\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"625\" height=\"436\" src=\"https:\/\/dg-newsletter2425.rid3450.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/04.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1068 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Invisible disabilities<\/strong>, also known as hidden disabilities or non-visible disabilities (NVDs), are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Disabilities\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-color\">disabilities<\/mark><\/a>&nbsp;that are not immediately apparent. They are typically&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chronic_illness\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-color\">chronic illnesses<\/mark><\/a>&nbsp;and conditions that significantly impair normal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Activities_of_daily_living\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-color\">activities of daily living<\/mark><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-center coblocks-animate\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 26%\" data-coblocks-animation=\"fadeIn\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, some people with visual or auditory disabilities who do not wear&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glasses\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-color\">glasses<\/mark><\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hearing_aid\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-color\">hearing aids<\/mark><\/a>, or who use discreet hearing aids, may not be obviously disabled. Some people who have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vision_loss\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-color\">vision loss<\/mark><\/a>&nbsp;may wear&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Contact_lenses\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-color\">contact lenses<\/mark><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Invisible disabilities can also include issues with mobility, such as a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sitting_disability\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-color\">sitting disability<\/mark><\/a>&nbsp;like chronic back pain, joint problems, or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chronic_pain\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-color\">chronic pain<\/mark><\/a>. People affected may not use&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mobility_aid\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-color\">mobility aids<\/mark><\/a><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-color\">&nbsp;<\/mark>on some days, or at all, because severity of pain or level of mobility may change from day to day.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"785\" height=\"778\" src=\"https:\/\/dg-newsletter2425.rid3450.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/05.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1069 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dg-newsletter2425.rid3450.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/05.png 785w, https:\/\/dg-newsletter2425.rid3450.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/05-768x761.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 785px) 100vw, 785px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-purple-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-e564512d91913a35376d8d6ecac3ed15 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>Driving Innovation Through Inclusion<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Embracing disability as an integral part of DEI can drive innovation. Diverse teams, including those with members who have disabilities, are more likely to approach problems creatively and develop solutions that cater to a wider audience. Peter, the visually impaired Deputy CEO of Dialogue in the Dark (HK) Foundation, advocated for viewing individuals not as disabled, but as unique beings \u2013 \u201cPeople with Differences\u201d \u2013 with their own right to dream, to play and to work. Olivia, MTR\u2019s General Manager in Environmental &amp; Social Responsibility, highlighted the company\u2019s initiatives to empower individuals from diverse backgrounds, including ethnic minorities and people with disabilities, through specialized traineeship programs. Rotary Club of Hong Kong Island East and Rotary Club of The Hub Hong Kong showcased their DEI-focused service projects, illustrating how Rotary can promote DEI within the community. The event culminated in a DEI Round The Globe Quiz, challenging participants to reflect on their understanding of DEI\u2019s true essence.
